Funeral Grant

When an adult or child dies, his or her spouse or parent (or executor of the estate) can apply to Work and Income New Zealand for a lump sum contribution towards funeral costs.

This grant is normally only available to clients of Work and Income New Zealand, where the assets of the estate are too small to cover the costs of the funeral and the burial or cremation.

Work and Income New Zealand requires the following documents before your application can be assessed:

  • Funeral account
  • Details of assets and liabilities from the administrators
  • Death Certificate
  • A fully completed application form.

Your local Griefcare funeral director can help you make this application and in some cases may be able to apply on your behalf.

Accident Compensation

The Accident Compensation Corporation has a funeral grant available where the death can be attributable to an accident. Application forms are available from ACC offices, or your Griefcare funeral director may assist you in preparing all the documentation.

ACC requires the following documentation to be presented with your application:

  • Funeral account
  • Death Certificate
  • Details of the accident
  • Birth Certificate for dependents
  • Marriage Certificate where applicable
  • Details of deceased’s employment over the previous 12 months
  • A fully completed application form.
