- Autopsy
- a post-mortem examination to discover the cause of death or the extent of
disease
- Coroner
- an official who holds inquests into violent, sudden, or suspicious
deaths
- Coffin
- the receptacle used to contain the body for the purpose of the funeral and the following burial or cremation. Also referred to as a 'casket' or 'couch'
- Crematorium
- building where the dead are cremated (pl. crematoriums or crematoria)
- Death Certificate (BDM108)
- legal document issued under the seal of the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages used for legal and geneological purposes. Often confused with Medical Certificate of Death (see definition below). Available from BDM at a cost of $21
- Eulogy
- a speech or piece of writing that praises someone highly
- Executor
- a person appointed by a testator to carry out terms of their will
- Inquest
- an inquiry by a coroner .s court into the cause of death
- Inter
- place (a corpse) in a grave or tomb
- Medical Certificate of the Causes of Death (BDM50)
- an official statement signed by a doctor of the cause, date, and place of a
person’s death. Also commonly (but wrongly) referred to as the Death Certificate (see definition above).
- Mortuary
- a room or building in which dead bodies are kept until burial or
cremation
- Pathologist
- a medical pathologist studies human diseases and conditions, the effects of
diseases and injury on the body, and the effects of treatment
- Post-mortem
- an examination of a dead body to determine the cause of death
- Tangi
- to cry; the mourning for the dead
- Tangihanga
- the ceremony of mourning the dead
- Testator
- a person who has made a will or given a legacy
- Tupapaku
- the body of the deceased
- Urupa
- cemetery; burial place
